Adult Literacy Fact:
Nearly 1/2 of all adults with low literacy levels are living in poverty, even if they are employed.

Tutors

Tutoring is an immensely rewarding experience. If you can read, you can tutor. The Council provides a simple, 12-hour tutor training program--a tested and proven method of teaching others to read.

As a new volunteer, your interests and available time will be assessed by the WLC staff, and you will then be matched with a compatible student.

Tutors and students meet in public places through out the community such as libraries, schools and churches. During the tutoring process, you will receive support materials and ongoing assistance in developing your tutoring skills.

To learn more about becoming a tutor, attend a volunteer tutor orientation. Orientations are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 6pm at Bellingham Public Library Meeting Room, Grand & Central.

For more information on becoming a WLC tutor, email us at staff@whatcomliteracy.org or call us at 647-3264.
